If Satan had been Prometheus, he would have stolen fire to warm himself, not to help Mankind. A true Promethean / Romantic hero has to rebel against an unjust tyranny in an attempt to right a wrong or help someone less fortunate. Unlike Adam, who discusses a multiplicity of subjects with Raphael, rarely mentioning his own desires, Satan sees everything in terms of what will happen to him. His interests always turn on his personal desires. Satan commits this act not because of the tyranny of God but because he wants what he wants rather than what God wants. Satan attempts to destroy the hierarchy of Heaven through his rebellion. For Milton, Satan is the enemy who chooses to commit an act that goes against the basic laws of God, that challenges the very nature of the universe. No matter how brilliantly Milton created the character of Satan, the chief demon cannot be the hero of the poem. Further, because all of the other characters in the poem - Adam, Eve, God, the Son, the angels - are essentially types rather than characters, Milton spends more artistic energy on the development of Satan so that throughout the poem, Satan's character maintains the reader's interest and, perhaps, sympathy - at least to an extent. The presentation of Satan makes him seem greater than he actually is and initially draws the reader to Satan's viewpoint. In essence then, Milton's grand poetic style sets Satan up as heroic in Books I and II. Moreover, the reader can easily overlook the fact that Milton states that, whatever powers and abilities the fallen angels have in Hell, those powers and abilities come from God, who could at any moment take them away. Because the reader hears Satan's version first, the reader is unaware of the exaggerations and outright lies that are parts of Satan's magnificent speeches. These facts certainly make Satan the most interesting character in the poem - but they do not make him the hero. Also, Milton's writing in these books, and his characterization of Satan, make the archfiend understandable and unforgettable. Milton, by beginning in medias res gives Satan the first scene in the poem, a fact that makes Satan the first empathetic character. The reader's introduction to the poem is through Satan's point of view. Without question, this picture of Satan makes him heroic in his initial introduction to the reader.īesides his actions, Satan also appears heroic because the first two books focus on Hell and the fallen angels. Finally, he goes forth on his own to cross Chaos and find Earth. Satan also calls for and leads the grand council. Satan tells the other rebels that they can make "a Heav'n of Hell, a Hell of Heav'n" (I, 255) and adds, "Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heav'n" (I, 263). In those books, Satan rises off the lake of fire and delivers his heroic speech still challenging God. Most of these writers based their ideas on the picture of Satan in the first two books of Paradise Lost. Writers and critics of the Romantic era advanced the notion that Satan was a Promethean hero, pitting himself against an unjust God. However, the progression, or, more precisely, regression, of Satan's character from Book I through Book X gives a much different and much clearer picture of Milton's attitude toward Satan. Probably the most famous quote about Paradise Lost is William Blake's statement that Milton was "of the Devil's party without knowing it." While Blake may have meant something other than what is generally understood from this quotation (see "Milton's Style" in the Critical Essays), the idea that Satan is the hero, or at least a type of hero, in Paradise Lost is widespread.

The breakfasts were both great, and I often dine here, when not staying at the hotel - it is good enough to walk from beyond Union Square, or the SoMa Area, and is probably my favorite breakfast in San Francisco. While we have had several dinners at Campton Place, we dined off-property each evening of this trip. Only Breakfast, Lunch and Drinks on This Visit In October, we were back at the Taj Campton Hotel, and dined in their Michelin-starred Campton Place restaurant, and its attached bistro. We always have breakfast here, when staying at the Taj Campton, but then walk over, when we are not. While not inexpensive for breakfast, we both feel that for the quality of the food, this is one of the best breakfast values in the Union Square area. This morning, it was great! Service was excellent, and our coffee cups always refilled. I have had this dish before, and only once was not 100% pleased. I opted for the Lobster Knuckle Frittata w/ breakfast salad. The “over-easy” eggs were perfectly cooked, and I inherited most of her home fries, as she is just not a potato person at breakfast. This was, as always, an excellent choice. With coffee on the table, my wife went with the California Breakfast w/ two eggs, home fries, a breakfast salad, wheat toast, applewood-smoked bacon and cranberry juice. The room was lovely, even on a gloomy morning, and we were seated in one of the booths, across from the windows. Just a Great Breakfast In February, we were back in San Francisco for a wine maker event, and though we were staying at another hotel, near Union Square, walked over to the Taj Campton Place, to have breakfast at their restaurant, Campton Place, just off of their lovely lobby. I also absolutely love the last five tracks as well: Tears of Joy, Rainbow Flyer, Chasing Down Sadness, Joy Turns to Sadness/A Growing Personality and The Joy of Credits. This is one of the score's faster, more "intense" or dramatic pieces that really caught me ear. This is a fun track in the tradition of Pixar's previous "jazzy" style cues (such as "The Flik Machine" from A Bug's Life or "The Scare Floor" from Monsters Inc.). It stood out when I saw the film and has become one of my favorites when listening to the soundtrack. This very short, simple track touches me emotionally. Utilizes mostly the "Bundle of Joy" theme heard in the first track. This is a gorgeous, sweeping melodic piece that brings a couple additional main themes that will be heard in variations throughout the rest of the score. I could listen to it over and over again. This soft, beautiful opening instantly introduces the film's marvelous main theme. Though I love the entire score, here are some of the tracks that really stood out to me: The soft, tender moments of the soundtrack are my personal favorites, but there are some really fun, quirky and creative tracks as well that I've grown very fond of. If you're avoiding all story points, skip the rest of this review until you've seen the film :) Warning- Potential spoilers within track listings below. Movie hadn't even started yet and I was sold. Score by composer Michael Giacchino, I already started to feel it. Like I said in my review of the film: as soon as the Disney logos came on with the beautiful brand new musical I have to say, I have had the music stuck in my head since I saw the film nearly three weeks ago and my wife can attest to my non-stop whistling of it. Beautiful piano rifts round out the film's glorious themes played throughout. Much of this score is very light, "airy" if you will, and whimsical with touches of smooth, "glass like" sounds that go perfectly with what you'd imagine inside the mind would sound like. As far as what I'm talking about, it's very hard to describe unless you hear it for yourself. Giacchino's choice of instruments and other sounds make this a truly unique listening experience. This is an astoundingly beautiful score that sounds unlike anything out there. Well, I'm happy to say Michael has done it again with Inside Out- and it exceeds what I had hoped for. My expectations were very high given the fact that composer Michael Giacchino's previous Pixar scores ( Up, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Cars 2) are some of my all time favorites. The Inside Out soundtrack has been my most anticipated soundtrack release this year thus far. In addition to the bounce zone, they have rides, go karts, and bowling, as well as laser tag, bumper cars, a ropes course and rock wall, and even mini golf. We had lots of fun and hope to go back again soon. While younger toddlers might not enjoy this quite as much, any kid who has been walking more than a few months sure will! My baby still was giggling the whole time and trying to climb up all the giant cushions. We left pretty happy but on top of that, we got a balloon too! We had sheet cake and they offered Kool Aid pouches or water. Other than not being baby proof, the contents should appeal to all ages. We got free favor bags which included dental friendly lollipops (made with xylitol) and some toys including a wrist band, coloring books and crayons. There was a viewing screen for pictures of our jump session, taken for free courtesy of the staff. Already bright and cheerful throughout the building, this room featured an inflatable throne for the birthday boy or girl. Our bounce time was over though so it was time to go to the party room. I would have been jumping as well if my kids were a little older and more independent. I could see this place being very fun for older kids and pre-teens. She still needs to work on her wall climbing but otherwise she was elated. The large slide was a hit as was the obstacle course. However I could hardly keep pace with my excited big girl! For whatever reason, this room was a bit more intriguing than the first. My one year old, true to baby form, was most enthralled with one of the many balls bouncing around, which can be rented at the front desk. This one had a rock climbing wall, double sided obstacle course, large slides and a large basketball bounce house (about half court size with hoops on either end). My four year old didn’t know where to start! I liked how enclosed all the structures were (no possibility of accidentally tumbling out onto the floor) though this obscured the view a little.Īfter trying out everything in the first area, we explored the next room. My one year old was a little overwhelmed but had fun just watching. This was near more standard bounce houses. There was also a free throw basketball game, great for older kids and athletically inclined adults. This included an obstacle course which was full of little tunnels and holes to jump through. The floor had large foam blocks for toddlers to climb on as well as about a half dozen full size bounce structures. There were lots of cubby holes for putting away our shoes. We walked in, signed a waiver and were shown into the first activity room. Little things like that always ease my mind when out with little ones still learning safety rules. However the parking lot felt secure as it was enclosed at the end and therefore had hardly any traffic. The Greenville Pump It Up location is a bit tucked away from the main road, so you’ll have to look for it. However we loved it! Truthfully we almost didn’t make it as daddy was under the weather so we were a bit late. I recently attended the free “birthday” event at local bounce house Pump It Up celebrating their 15th anniversary in business.

It's a well-designed, highly functional personal email app that adds in some basic file management (with OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, and Box) and a calendar, so you can handle all the extras around email, like attaching files and scheduling events, in one place. This isn't a bloated, enterprise product. The Outlook mobile app is a far cry from the desktop app. It supports all the major email services except POP3 accounts, so you don't have to use an Outlook or Hotmail account to make use of it. Mail by Apple compatibility: Gmail, iCloud, Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL, GMX, Exchange, IMAP accounts Most folks with an iPhone should start by giving it a try-if it doesn't work for you, then you can move on to another app on this list. If you just need the email basics, Apple Mail is one of the best. Similarly, you can enable notifications for responses to individual email threads if, for example, you're waiting for a reply from customer support and want to know as soon as you get it. Contacts added to the VIP list have their own dedicated inbox that always pushes notifications. Unfortunately, that means you might miss something important. If you're overwhelmed by the number of emails you receive, it's tempting to turn off all notifications. Another spot where Mail steps beyond just sending and receiving emails is with a VIP Inbox and thread notifications. Two of my favorite email app features were added last year with the iOS 16 release: you can now schedule emails and undo sends (both of which come in handy for me because I frequently revise my emails). To only see the unread emails, tap the handy filter icon in the bottom-left corner. When you open the app, you'll see your email inbox with all your emails in reverse chronological order. It handles your email-whether you use iCloud, AOL, Gmail, Outlook, Exchange, or any other POP or IMAP compatible service-without any fuss. Yes, it's one of the most basic apps on this list, but that's an advantage: it's a simple and easy-to-use email app. Tracking compatibility with major email service providers.īased on all that testing, these are the best iPhone email apps.Īpple's Mail app has had a bit of a bad reputation over the years-that's why there's such a healthy ecosystem of alternative apps-but that criticism is now largely unwarranted. As I went through each of the apps, my testing process involved:Įxploring all available features when composing and sending emails, like send delays, scheduling, and file attachments.Īssessing how well emails were received on other platforms. So I dug in deep, put them to the test, and determined which ones were more than just marketing hype. Along those lines, I also looked for apps that had the most efficient and creative methods for email organization-along with productivity features like snooze options and built-in calendars.Įven with all these criteria, there are a huge number of options to consider. Maintaining a clean inbox free of spam and clutter is top of mind for many, so I looked for apps that included some degree of spam filters, cleanup suggestions, and security options. They also tend to charge a monthly fee, and while there are paid apps on this list, I generally avoided apps that required expensive subscriptions. While these are useful for organizations, they're needlessly complicated for day-to-day emailing. Since we're focusing on the iPhone, which you're likely using for personal use rather than intense work, I rejected any primarily team-focused or collaborative email apps, like Front. An Apple Watch companion app, however, was a bonus. I wanted to showcase email apps that could be the only way you accessed your email if you wanted. I also focused on standalone email apps for iPhone, rather than apps that are really just add-ons for a web or desktop app. For more details on our process, read the full rundown of how we select apps to feature on the Zapier blog.įor starters, with one or two exceptions, I only considered apps that supported all the major email providers, like Gmail, Yahoo Mail, iCloud Mail, and IMAP accounts.
